Marshlands in Denmark
From the project "Between Heaven and Earth"
The coastal areas of the south western corner of Denmark are a magnificent landscape of marshlands and vast tidal flats. They are the largest in the world, protected by UNESCO and stretch all the way down to the Netherlands.
I have visited this area on numerous occasions during the past eight years. It has always been a fascinating, sometimes even a spiritual experience.
The sea and the low horizon all the way around produce a very special light that keeps changing. And the weather can change rapidly - from the brightest to the darkest, changing the atmosphere from the inviting to the ominous. Vast landscapes may seem empty and desolate, but a closer look reveals traces of human activity. A road, a path, a wheel track or other imprints.
The silence is overwhelming. If you are here alone, you may feel quite lonely. In the flat landscape and the huge space you may sense something enigmatic – both fascinating and disturbing.
Some of these photos were shown in 2006 in Galerie Dorothée in Vence, France, and in 2013 at Galleri Strædet, Møgeltønder, Denmark.
